Las Canarias - San Antonio

What better end to a romantic walk along a man-made canal then a romantic meal ? When we happened across Las Canarias restaurant during our leisurely stroll, dusk was falling and the lighting and ambience that Las Canarias was emitting drew us in immediately.

We had wanted to sit by the window and people-watching but unfortunately a few other couples had already had that idea so we settled for a table a little further in - luckily the food took our breath away and we forgot all about the window seats.

The menu is the sort of modern french cooking with a twist that makes you want to sample a bit of everything. Faced with two pages of fresh sounding ingredients, we decided to have not just one but two starters ! Luckily the portions were restaurant sized not America sized.

DSC02586To start, Rob and I shared a parsley crepe that was stuffed with brie and rasberry compote and drizzled with raspberry puree topped with crisp leaves. The crepe was wonderfully soft and the cheese and fruit integrated perfectly.

Both soups came artfully presented in asymmetrical bowls with various oils and garnishes floating in them. Their tastes couldn't be more different from each other, Rob's chowder was creamy with a spicy edge and a crunchy fish goujon and bite sized potato pieces. My gazpacho was silky in texture, delciously fruity in taste and the small cubes of mango added a nice texture.

DSC02589DSC02591Time for the main courses and with everything that had gone before being so good, we couldn't wait. Rob ordered a wonderfully creamy vegtable risotto that had just the right amount of give and I ordered a dish of crispy skinned salmon (so crispy it was like crackling!) which arrived perched on top of a smokily seasoned ratatouille.

Las Canarias was a wonderful showcase of simple ingredients turned into starry dishes and was perfect for the romantic setting of San Antonio´s Riverwalk.
