That's what I've always been told, but fortunately for the lucky readers of this blog we weren't at the San An in 'Beefa. It turns out there is another, very lovely San Antonio, which has a great history and a fantastic Spanish/Mexican feel about it.
We were originally going to Houston, but were persuaded by a number of locals that Houston is a 'souless black hole' and an overly large place for pedestrians, and that San An' was the place to go after Austin. They were correct.
San Antonio is mainly famous for two things; the River Walk and the Alamo. We visited the River Walk almost as soon as we arrived. It is a very pretty canal with restaurants down either side lit up with fairy lights. It's very romantic. So we went to Joe's Crab Shack!
After Joe's not so romantic Crab Shack, we walked a little further down for a fantastic meal in Las Canarias, a fairly posh restaurant that served cordon bleu tucker. After that we wandered from bar to bar, feeling very full, and very full of love.
Like I already said the other thing San Antonio is famous for other than super clubs and go-go bars is the Alamo. It is a 18thC Spanish mission where the first Spanish missionaries set about converting the indigenous population to the Catholic religion and as subjects of New Spain. Over time it became important as a military stronghold and famous as the site for one of the most important and famous battles of the Texas Revolution. OK, history lesson over. Once we got inside the Alamo it was very sobering to think of the men that died here and what the revolution meant to them.
All in all, San Antonio was a great recommendation and a beautiful side to Texan life. Houston however, we visited for two hours on the way to New Orleans. It was a dump. The End.
ps.
